• Freezer cold, refrigerator warm — on most models cold air reaches the fresh-food section from the freezer through a fan and duct. Frost blocking that path, a failed evaporator fan or a stuck damper is the usual cause.
• Frost on the back wall of the freezer — the automatic defrost system is not doing its job: a defrost heater, sensor, thermostat or control.

What Not to Do

• Do not chip ice off the evaporator with a knife or screwdriver. One hole in the tubing turns a defrost repair into a sealed-system repair.
• Do not pull a built-in or panel-ready refrigerator out of its opening yourself — it is anchored, heavy and connected to a water line.
• Do not keep unplugging and replugging a refrigerator that clicks and won't start. Repeated start attempts are hard on the compressor.
• Do not use a heat gun or hair dryer on plastic liners to melt ice. Leaving the unit unplugged with the doors open, and the food moved to coolers, is safer.
