Sealed System & Compressor Repair — the Refrigerator Job Most Companies Turn Away

Quick answer

The sealed system is the refrigerator's closed refrigerant loop — compressor, condenser, filter drier and evaporator — and when it fails most repair companies tell you to buy a new fridge. We do this work: our technicians hold the EPA Section 608 Universal certification required to recover and handle refrigerant, so we can find the leak, replace the compressor or drier, evacuate and recharge the system. We give a free estimate over the phone, and the refrigerator service call is applied toward the repair once you approve an exact price, and the repair carries a 90-day parts and labor warranty — see refrigerator repair for everything outside the sealed system.

When a refrigerator's sealed system fails, many repair companies simply say "buy a new fridge" — because sealed system work requires certified refrigerant handling, brazing equipment, and real diagnostic experience. Our technicians hold the EPA Section 608 Universal certification — the federal license to recover and handle refrigerant on any system — and we do this work across Orange County, including on built-in and luxury refrigerators where replacement would cost many thousands of dollars.

What the Sealed System Is

The sealed system is your refrigerator's closed refrigeration loop: the compressor pumps refrigerant (commonly R600a in modern units, R134a in older ones) through the condenser coil, past a filter drier, through a capillary tube into the evaporator coil, where it absorbs heat from inside the cabinet. If any part of this loop fails — or refrigerant leaks out — no amount of fan, thermostat, or control board work will bring the cold back.

Signs of a Sealed System Problem

Not sure it's the sealed system? Start with our refrigerator-not-cooling checklist — several cheaper causes (coils, fans, defrost) mimic these symptoms, and we always rule them out first.

What Our Repair Includes

⚠️ Safety note: modern refrigerators use R600a (isobutane) — a flammable refrigerant. Opening the sealed system without proper equipment and EPA-compliant refrigerant handling is dangerous and illegal to vent. This is strictly a professional repair.

Repair or Replace?

A sealed system repair makes the most sense on built-in and high-end units (Sub-Zero, Liebherr, Thermador, Monogram — where a replacement unit costs many times the repair), on refrigerators under roughly 10 years old, and whenever the compressor is still under a manufacturer parts warranty. For an older basic-model fridge, we'll tell you honestly when replacement is the smarter money — see our repair-or-replace guide.
