Freezer Not Cooling or Freezing? Causes & What to Check
A freezer that's running — you can hear the compressor — but ice cream is soft and food is thawing is a different problem from a warm refrigerator, and it shows up on both built-in freezer compartments and standalone chest or upright freezers. Here's what usually causes it, in the order we'd check it.
1. Frost Buildup on the Evaporator Coil
This is the single most common cause. The evaporator coil (hidden behind the back panel of most freezers) is supposed to defrost automatically a few times a day. If the defrost heater, thermostat, or timer fails, frost keeps building up until it completely blocks airflow — the compressor runs constantly, but no cold air reaches the compartment. A telltale sign: the back panel feels ice-cold or you see frost through the vents, while the freezer itself stays warm.
2. Evaporator Fan Iced Over or Failed
The fan that pushes cold air through the freezer can freeze solid (a symptom of the same defrost failure above) or simply burn out. Listen for it: a loud buzz or rattle that stops when you open the door usually means ice is catching the fan blades. No fan noise at all when the door is closed points to a dead fan motor.
3. Door or Lid Not Sealing
On upright freezers, check the gasket the same way as a fridge — close it on a dollar bill and see if it slides out easily. On chest freezers, check that the lid seats evenly all the way around; a freezer that isn't level (common on garage floors) won't seal properly on one side no matter how hard the door is pushed shut.
4. Overloaded or Blocked Freezer
Packed solid with no gaps for air to circulate, a freezer can't move cold air to every corner — items near the door or top stay warmer than the back. This is more common right after a big grocery trip or when a chest freezer is used for long-term bulk storage.
5. Thermostat or Control Board
If the compressor is running fine, the door seals, and there's no frost problem, a failed thermostat or control board may simply not be telling the compressor to run cold enough. This is common on older mechanical-dial freezers and is a straightforward, inexpensive part to replace.
6. Standalone Freezer Placement (Garage or Outdoor)
Many chest and upright freezers aren't rated to run reliably below about 32°F ambient (an unheated garage in winter) or above roughly 110°F. In a hot Orange County garage in summer, or a cold garage in winter, the compressor's own thermostat can misjudge the room and cycle incorrectly. If the freezer struggles only in extreme-temperature months, this is worth ruling out before assuming a part failed.
7. Compressor or Sealed-System Failure
If everything above checks out, the compressor, start relay, or a refrigerant leak in the sealed system may be at fault. How Long Is Food Safe?
Per USDA guidance: a full freezer holds a safe temperature for about 48 hours with the door closed, or about 24 hours if half full.
