Ice Maker Not Working? Causes, Brand-by-Brand Resets, and When to Call

A dead ice maker is one of the top five refrigerator calls we run in Orange County, and about a third of them are solved with a switch, a filter or a reset before a part is touched. This guide goes through the causes in the order we check them, gives the reset procedure for each major brand, and explains the point where an "ice maker problem" is really a refrigerator problem. It covers residential ice makers in LG, Samsung, Whirlpool, GE, KitchenAid, Frigidaire and Bosch refrigerators; for restaurant and office machines, see commercial ice machine repair.

Check These Before Anything Else

The Common Failures, in Order

Frozen fill tube

The small tube that delivers water into the ice mold freezes solid when the fill valve drips, when the freezer runs too cold, or when the door is opened often enough to let humid coastal air in. Symptom: no water reaches the mold, the ice maker cycles empty, and sometimes there is a stalagmite of ice at the back of the freezer. You can thaw it with a hair dryer on low or by unplugging the fridge for a few hours, but if it refreezes within a week, the inlet valve is weeping and should be replaced.

Water inlet valve

The solenoid valve behind the fridge (dual-coil on units with a dispenser) is the number one hard-part failure. Scale from hard water builds up on the seat, the screen clogs, or the coil weakens. Symptoms: small cubes, a mold that fills only partway, a faint hum from the back of the fridge every few hours without water flowing, or the opposite β€” an overflowing mold and ice sheets on the freezer floor from a valve that will not close. Replacement is typically $180–$320 including labor.

Ice maker module or motor

The mold thermostat, the motor that turns the ejector, and the heater that releases cubes all live in the ice maker assembly. When the ejector stalls halfway with cubes stuck in the tray, or the assembly never advances, the module is done. On most Whirlpool, GE and KitchenAid units the whole ice maker is replaced as a unit ($220–$450 typical); on LG and Samsung the part is brand-specific and slightly higher.

Ice compartment frosting (Samsung, some LG)

Samsung French-door units from roughly 2015–2021 (RF23J, RF263, RF28 series and others) are known for the ice bucket freezing into a block, the auger jamming, and the ice maker quitting. The cause is warm air leaking into the ice compartment. The reliable fix is Samsung's updated ice maker kit plus sealing the compartment, not a fourth reset.

Auger motor and dispenser

Ice is made but will not dispense β€” the auger motor in the door or bucket has failed, the bucket is not seated, or a clump of fused ice is blocking the chute.

LG Craft Ice

LG's round Craft Ice maker (LRMVS, LRFVS, LRMDS and similar French-door models) is a separate unit below the standard ice maker with its own fill, freezing plate and release heater. Common complaints: no round ice while regular ice works fine, ice balls with a hole or a flat side, or the machine getting stuck mid-cycle. Small or flat balls are usually low water fill β€” the same filter and inlet-valve story. A unit that stops cycling generally needs the Craft Ice assembly, and in a few cases the control board. As an LG Factory Authorized service company we carry the current LG parts and firmware bulletins for these models.

Reset Procedures by Brand

A reset forces one harvest cycle. If the ice maker runs through the cycle but no water arrives, the problem is the valve, filter or fill tube. If it will not move at all, the module or its power feed has failed.

Hard Water in Orange County

Most of Orange County's water comes from a blend of imported Colorado River water and local groundwater and runs hard β€” typically 12–17 grains per gallon. That is why fill tubes scale up, inlet valve screens clog, and cloudy ice with white flakes shows up in Irvine, Tustin, Orange and Anaheim homes. Replace the filter every six months on the calendar, not when the light comes on, and if you have a whole-house softener, make sure the fridge line is on the softened side.

When It Is the Refrigerator, Not the Ice Maker

An ice maker is a thermometer with a motor. If the freezer is not cold enough, the ice maker will not cycle, and no number of new ice makers will fix it. Signs the real problem is deeper: the freezer is at 10–20Β°F instead of 0Β°F, frost on the back panel, ice cream soft, the fridge side warm too, or the compressor running constantly. Those point to a defrost failure, an evaporator fan, a refrigerant leak or a weak compressor. Refrigerant work is a sealed-system repair that requires EPA-certified technicians and proper recovery equipment. We diagnose the whole refrigerator on the same $85 service call, so you are not paying for an ice maker you do not need.

What We Do On-Site

We confirm freezer temperature, test the inlet valve with a meter and by direct fill, check water pressure at the fridge, inspect the fill tube and mold, force a harvest cycle, and on Samsung units check the compartment seal. Most ice maker repairs are done in one visit from parts on the truck, with a 90-day parts & labor warranty. Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my ice maker stop making ice all of a sudden?

The most common reasons are the ice maker being switched off or the wire arm left up, a frozen fill tube, a water filter past its life, a failed water inlet valve, or a freezer that is not cold enough (it needs to be at or below about 5Β°F for most ice makers to cycle). Check the switch, the filter and the freezer temperature first, then run the brand reset.

Why are my ice cubes small, hollow or misshapen?

Low water fill. Usually a clogged filter, a partially blocked inlet valve, low house water pressure (under about 20 psi at the fridge), or scale in the fill tube from hard Orange County water. Replace the filter first; if cubes stay small, the inlet valve is the next suspect.

How do I reset an LG ice maker?

On most LG models, open the freezer or ice compartment, find the test/reset button on the underside or side of the ice maker, and hold it about 3 seconds until the ice maker starts to turn and you hear a chime. It takes 3–4 hours before the first harvest. On LG Craft Ice models the round-ice maker resets from the control panel by holding the Craft Ice button; if it still fails, the ball-ice unit usually needs a technician.

Why does my Samsung ice maker keep freezing up?

Many Samsung French-door models (RF23, RF26, RF28 series) have a known issue where the ice compartment frosts over, the auger jams and the ice maker stops. Samsung released updated ice maker kits and a sealing fix. A reset (holding the test button on the front of the ice maker until it chimes) clears it temporarily; the lasting fix is the updated kit and sealing the compartment, which we install regularly across Orange County.

When is an ice maker problem actually the refrigerator itself?

If the freezer compartment is running warmer than about 10Β°F, ice will be slow or stop altogether no matter how healthy the ice maker is. A freezer that cannot hold temperature points to a defrost problem, an evaporator fan, or a sealed-system issue such as a refrigerant leak or a weak compressor. The ice maker is the messenger, not the problem.
