After a Power Outage: When the Refrigerator Does Not Come Back Right

Wind events are also when the power goes out, and the foothill edge of the city is the most exposed. Most refrigerators simply restart when power returns, but some do not, and outages are one of the more common reasons we get called to Lake Forest in the fall.

While the power is out

• Keep the doors shut. According to USDA food safety guidance, a closed refrigerator keeps food safe for about 4 hours; a full freezer holds for about 48 hours, a half-full one about 24.
• Perishables that sat above 40°F for more than 2 hours — meat, dairy, leftovers — should be thrown out. An appliance thermometer in each compartment tells you what actually happened.
• If you run a generator, keep it outside and away from windows, doors and the garage, and use a heavy-duty outdoor cord sized for the load. Never run one inside the garage, even with the door open.

When the power comes back

• Give it a few minutes. Many refrigerators hold the compressor off for several minutes after power returns to protect it. A quiet unit with a lit display is not necessarily broken.
• Give it time to pull down. A warm refrigerator can take many hours to get back to 37°F and 0°F, longer if it is full of warm food. Do not judge it in the first hour.

• Watch for a pattern. • Runs all the time, both sections slowly warming — a clogged condenser or a failed condenser fan first; then the start relay or, less often, the compressor or a refrigerant leak. Leaks are sealed system repair.
• Freezer fine, refrigerator warm — the fresh-food section on most models is cooled with air from the freezer. A stopped evaporator fan, a stuck damper or frost blocking the air path is the usual cause.
• Frost building on the back wall of the freezer — the defrost system is not doing its job: heater, sensor, thermostat or control.
