A useful pattern: if the freezer is still freezing but the fresh-food side is warm, you are almost always in the cheap half of the table (fan, defrost, damper, sensor). If both compartments are warm and the compressor is hot or silent, you are looking at the relay at best and the compressor at worst. What the Service Call Actually Covers
The refrigerator service call is a flat fee that is applied toward the repair if you have us do the work. It is not a "we show up and look" fee. On a no-cool refrigerator the technician measures real compartment temperatures with a probe (not the display), pulls the freezer back panel to read the frost pattern on the evaporator — a fully frosted coil says defrost failure, a coil frosted only near the inlet says low refrigerant, a clean coil with a warm fridge says fan or damper — checks the evaporator and condenser fans, tests the defrost heater and thermostat for continuity, checks compressor amperage against the nameplate, and tests the start relay. You get a written quote with the part, labor and tax before anything is ordered. Repair or Replace? The Rule of Thumb We Use
Two questions decide it: how old is the refrigerator, and what does the repair cost against a comparable new unit installed?
- The 50% rule. If the repair costs more than half the price of an equivalent new refrigerator, and the unit is past the halfway point of its expected life, replacement usually wins. A compressor job on a 12-year-old entry-level side-by-side fails that test. The same job on a 5-year-old French door passes it easily. - Age brackets. Under 8 years: repair almost anything except a compressor on a bottom-tier unit. 8–12 years: repair fans, defrost parts, valves, gaskets, relays; think hard about compressors and control boards. Over 12 years on a standard freestanding unit: repair the cheap stuff, replace on sealed-system failure.
- Stacked failures. If the fridge has already had two repairs in the past two years, add those to the math. A third repair on a tired unit is rarely the last one.
- Built-ins are different. See below — the replacement side of the equation is so expensive that repair stays sensible for 15–20 years.

Why Sub-Zero, Liebherr, Thermador and Other Built-Ins Cost More
The same failure on a built-in costs substantially more than it does on a freestanding refrigerator, and there are concrete reasons for that:
- Parts pricing. A Sub-Zero evaporator fan or a Liebherr electronic control is a low-volume, dealer-channel part — several times the cost of the equivalent Whirlpool part.
- Two of everything. Sub-Zero 600/700-series and PRO 48 units run dual compressors and dual evaporators. Liebherr DuoCooling runs two separate circuits. That doubles the components that can fail and lengthens the diagnosis.
- Access. Integrated panels, 84-inch tall cabinets, units anchored to the wall, condensers on top behind a grille — a 45-minute job on a freestanding fridge becomes a two- to three-hour job. Some Sub-Zero sealed-system work is done with the unit pulled forward on its rollers, which needs two people.
- Sealed-system labor. A compressor on a 600-series Sub-Zero is one of the largest refrigerator jobs there is, and a PRO 48 is larger still. It is normally still far cheaper than replacing the unit, because a built-in replacement means new cabinetry work as well as a new refrigerator.

Garage refrigerators. A second fridge in an Irvine or Mission Viejo garage sees 100°F-plus on Santa Ana days. Compressors and condenser fans in garage units fail years earlier, and we see more start-relay and overload failures there than anywhere else.
Hard water. Orange County water runs 200–300 ppm hardness. Water inlet valves, ice maker molds and dispenser lines scale up; a valve that would last 15 years in soft water lasts 6–8 here. Budget for the inlet valve on any unit with an ice maker past 7 years.
Coastal humidity. In Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, Laguna Beach and Dana Point, door gaskets sweat and mildew faster, and defrost systems work harder. Gasket replacement is a more frequent line item near the coast.
Parts availability. Most Whirlpool, GE, LG, Samsung and Frigidaire parts are on the truck or one day away. Sub-Zero, Liebherr and Miele parts generally take 2–5 business days, which affects how you should plan your food, not the price.
How to Keep the Bill at the Low End
- Call early. A fridge that is "a little warm" is often a cheap fan; a fridge that has been struggling for three weeks may have cooked its compressor, which is the most expensive repair on the list.
- Clean the condenser coil once a year (twice if you have pets). It is the single cheapest thing that prevents the most expensive failure.
- Do not run a fridge that is clicking every two minutes. That is the overload protecting a compressor that cannot start; let us swap the relay before the windings suffer.
