Liebherr Refrigerator Not Cooling? Causes & Fixes from an Authorized Servicer

A Liebherr that's losing its cool is worth taking seriously — these are precision refrigerators built around exact temperatures, and the food inside them is usually worth protecting too. Start With the Pattern — It Tells Half the Story

• Fridge warm, freezer fine (or the reverse). Most Liebherr combinations use DuoCooling — two independent cooling circuits. One compartment failing while the other works points at that compartment's fan, sensor, defrost system or cooling circuit — not at "the whole fridge being dead." This is genuinely useful diagnostic information; mention it when you call.
• Everything slowly getting warmer over days or weeks. Classic pattern for a ventilation problem on built-ins, a dusty heat-exchange path, or a cooling system losing capacity. The compressor runs longer and longer to hold less and less.
• Warm after a power event or alarm. Check the display first — many models show the warmest temperature reached, which tells you both about food safety and about whether the unit is recovering on its own.

Five Things to Check Before You Call

• Settings and modes. Make sure the unit isn't in DEMO/showroom mode after a power blip, that SuperCool/SuperFrost isn't masking a problem by running flat-out, and that set temperatures are where you expect (37–39°F fridge, 0°F freezer is typical).
• Door seal and closing. A gasket that's dirty, nicked, or not seating — or a door stopped a half-inch short by a drawer or bottle — will quietly warm a compartment. On panel-ready integrated models, shifted cabinet panels and loosened hinges do the same thing.
• Ventilation (the big one for built-ins). Integrated Liebherr columns breathe through grilles in the cabinetry — usually in the toe-kick or above the unit. Blocked or dust-clogged grilles starve the unit of airflow; on hot summer days that alone can push a healthy fridge past its limits. Vacuum the grilles and make sure nothing is stored against them.
• Airflow inside. Vents inside the compartments must be clear — a compartment packed tight against the air outlets can't circulate, and the sensors read wrong.
• Frost where it shouldn't be. Thick frost on the back wall of a NoFrost freezer means the automatic defrost system has failed. Frost blocks the airflow that cools both compartments on single-circuit models — and the fix is a professional one (heater, sensor, or control fault).

Give the unit several hours after fixing anything above — refrigerators recover slowly, especially when full.

Causes That Need a Technician

• Defrost system failure — the most common professional fix behind "slowly getting warm." Ice builds on the evaporator until air can't move.
• Evaporator or condenser fan faults — rattling, grinding, or a fan that's simply stopped. No airflow, no cooling.
• Sensor and control-board faults — Liebherr electronics are precise; a drifted sensor makes a healthy cooling system chase the wrong target. Often shows an "F"-type error code on the display — photograph it and tell us the code when you call; it usually means we arrive with the right part.
• Cooling-circuit (sealed system) problems — the unit runs constantly and never reaches temperature. This is refrigerant work: recovery, brazing, evacuation, recharge. It's exactly the class of repair where our sealed-system experience and Liebherr authorization matter, and it's still usually worth doing on a unit built for a 15–20 year life (see repair or replace?).
