My garage freezer thaws on cold nights, but the refrigerator seems fine. Is it broken?
Often it is not. Most refrigerator-freezers have one temperature sensor in the fresh-food section, and the freezer only gets cold while the compressor runs. When the garage gets cold, the fresh-food side stays cold on its own, the compressor barely runs, and the freezer slowly warms. Check the room-temperature range in your owner’s manual, move the unit indoors for the winter, or use a freezer rated for a garage. My furnace starts, runs a few minutes and shuts off. What should I check?
Start with the filter — a clogged filter makes the furnace overheat and shut itself off on its safety limit. Make sure supply vents and the return grille are open, and put fresh batteries in the thermostat. If it keeps cycling, a dirty flame sensor or a failing limit switch is the usual cause, and that is a job for a technician. If you smell gas, leave the house and call SoCalGas from outside. After the fire smoke, my AC stopped cooling well. What happened?
Smoke and ash load the filter fast. A choked filter starves the indoor coil of air, the coil ices over and the airflow drops. Switch the thermostat from cooling to fan only for a few hours so the ice melts, replace the filter, and hose the dust and ash off the outdoor unit with the power off.
