AC Not Cooling? Why It Runs but Won't Cool the House
On a hot Orange County afternoon, an air conditioner that runs but won't cool is more than an annoyance. The system moving air tells you the blower works — it says nothing about whether heat is actually being removed. Start at the Thermostat
Set it to COOL and AUTO (not ON — ON runs the fan continuously and blows room-temperature air between cooling cycles, which feels like "warm air"). Drop the setpoint several degrees below the room temperature and listen for the outdoor unit to start. If the screen is blank, replace the thermostat batteries.
The Air Filter — the Most Common Cause
A clogged filter starves the system of airflow. Cooling drops, and worse, the evaporator coil can get so cold it freezes into a block of ice — at which point almost no air comes through. Check the filter first; if it's gray with dust, replace it. If you find ice on the indoor coil or the refrigerant lines, switch the system to FAN ONLY and let it thaw completely (often a few hours) before running cooling again.
The Outdoor Condenser Unit
The outdoor unit dumps your home's heat outside. If its coil is packed with dust, grass, or cottonwood, it can't release heat and cooling collapses — especially on the hottest days when it matters most. With the power off at the disconnect, gently rinse the outer fins with a hose from the inside out, and clear at least two feet of space around the unit. Never use a pressure washer — the fins bend easily.
Airflow Inside
Make sure return and supply vents are open and unblocked by furniture or rugs. A blower motor that's weak or failing reduces airflow the same way a dirty filter does, and contributes to coil freezing.
Causes That Need a Technician
- Failed run capacitor. A very common failure in our summer heat — the capacitor gives the compressor and fan motor their starting jolt. When it fails you may hear a hum or a click with no start, and no cooling. It's a frequent, fixable cause.
- Low refrigerant / leak. Refrigerant doesn't get consumed — low charge means a leak. Signs are weak cooling, ice on the lines, or a hissing sound. It requires leak detection, repair, and a proper recharge by an EPA-certified tech.
- Contactor and controls. The contactor is the relay that powers the outdoor unit; pitted contacts stop the unit from starting.
- Compressor. The heart of the system. A compressor that won't start (often downstream of a bad capacitor or contactor) means no cooling at all.
- Condensate safety switch. If the drain backs up, a float switch shuts cooling off to prevent water damage — clearing the drain restores it.
Safety and Smart Limits
Don't run a frozen or hard-locked system repeatedly — short-cycling a struggling compressor can turn a small repair into a replacement. If the breaker trips more than once, stop and call; a repeatedly tripping AC circuit is an electrical fault, not something to keep resetting.
