Almost always the condensate drain. Yes, and it is the most common avoidable problem we find here. The unit pulls air through its coil and discharges it upward; in a tight side yard some of that hot air rolls back down and is drawn through the coil again, so the system is fighting air it already heated. Head pressure climbs, capacity falls, the compressor runs hot. Keep about two feet clear on all sides, nothing solid overhead, and move the trash cans and stored boxes away from it. My laundry is upstairs and the dryer takes two cycles. Is that the machine?
Usually it is the vent, not the machine. An upstairs laundry room vents a long way, normally up through the roof with elbows on the way, and lint settles in every turn until airflow drops. The dryer then runs longer, overheats and blows a thermal fuse — sometimes repeatedly, because replacing the fuse does nothing about the restriction. A roof cap whose flap has stopped opening does the same. We check the vent and the exterior termination before condemning any heating part, and we will say so if the honest fix is a vent cleaning.
