Why won't my washer spin the clothes dry?

Opening the washer to a tub of sopping laundry is frustrating — but the cause is often simple and, sometimes, something you can fix in minutes. The key idea: a washer runs a sequence, and if any safety or drain step isn't satisfied, it skips or aborts the spin. Here's how we track it down. Related: our washer repair service.

1. The Load Itself

The number-one cause isn't a broken part — it's the load. A single heavy item like a comforter, or a bulky tangled load, throws the tub off balance. The washer senses the wobble and stops spinning to protect itself. Open it up, redistribute everything evenly around the tub, remove a few items, and restart the spin. Also make sure the machine is level — a washer that rocks will refuse to spin at speed.

2. It Has to Drain Before It Spins

Almost every washer drains the water out before the spin. If it can't drain, it won't spin — and you'll find a tub still full of water. On front-loaders, clean the drain pump filter behind the small door at the bottom front (keep a towel handy). A sock or coin caught in the pump is a classic cause. If the tub is full of water and won't drain, treat it as a drain problem first.

3. Lid Switch (Top-Loaders) and Door Lock (Front-Loaders)

For safety, a top-loader won't spin unless the lid switch confirms the lid is shut, and a front-loader won't spin unless the door lock engages (you'll usually hear a click). These parts wear out and are a very common reason a washer suddenly won't spin while everything else seems normal. If the lid or door isn't registering as closed, the machine simply skips the spin.

4. Drive Belt, Motor Coupler and Clutch

If the load is balanced, it drains, and the lid/door lock work, the cause is usually mechanical:

Drive belt. A stretched, glazed, or broken belt means the motor turns but the tub doesn't.
Motor coupler. On many top-loaders a plastic-and-rubber coupler connects motor to transmission; it's designed to wear out to protect the motor, and when it fails the tub won't spin.
Clutch or transmission. Worn clutches leave a weak, slow spin that never wrings the clothes out.

5. Motor Control and Drive Motor

Less often, the drive motor or its control board fails, or a wax motor / actuator that shifts the machine into spin mode gives out. These need meter testing to confirm — guessing here gets expensive.
