Professional GE, GE Profile and Monogram Repair in Irvine

A GE refrigerator that's warm on the fresh food side while the freezer still feels cold is, more often than not, a defrost problem. It's a common GE fault, and it's fixable. Alpha & Omega does professional GE repair, professional GE Profile repair and professional Monogram repair in Irvine, Tustin and Lake Forest and the South County cities down to San Clemente. Refrigerators and freezers first, then ovens and ranges.

We're an independent repair company, not part of GE Appliances' own service network. If your appliance is still under the manufacturer's warranty, call GE Appliances first.

Which GE appliances do you repair?

All three GE lines. Standard GE and GE Profile refrigerators in side-by-side, French door, bottom-freezer and top-freezer styles, GE freezers, and Monogram built-in refrigerators. On the cooking side, GE and GE Profile ranges and wall ovens, and Monogram pro-style ranges and wall ovens.

GE Appliances has been owned by Haier since 2016, but the product lines, model numbers and parts are still GE. Parts are widely available, which helps keep repairs to one or two visits.

Why is my GE refrigerator warm while the freezer is still cold?

Here's how a typical GE refrigerator works. Cold air is made at the evaporator coil behind the freezer back panel, and a fan pushes some of it into the fresh food section. On some models that air passes through a duct with a damper or a second fan. If anything along that path stops, the freezer stays cold and the refrigerator warms up.

A failed defrost is the most common reason that path gets blocked. The evaporator coil frosts over a little all day long, and several times a day a heater melts it off. When the heater, the defrost sensor or the control board stops doing its part, frost keeps building until air can't pass. You might see a frosted white back panel, hear the fan blade hitting ice, or find the fridge side at 45°F to 50°F while the freezer reads fine.

Here's the tell. If you unplug the refrigerator for a day and it then cools well for a week or so before warming up again, defrost is almost certainly the cause. That pattern is useful to tell us on the phone. It saves time on the visit. Our article on freezer frost buildup shows what normal and abnormal frost look like.

Why is there water or ice on my GE freezer floor?

Melted frost from the defrost cycle drains through a small tube at the bottom of the freezer into a pan under the refrigerator, where it evaporates. If that drain freezes or clogs, the water has nowhere to go. It turns into a sheet of ice on the freezer floor, or it leaks into the fresh food section and shows up as water under the crisper drawers.

Chipping the ice out only fixes it for a while. The real repair is clearing the drain and finding out why it froze in the first place, often a drain heater or a defrost issue upstream. Water on the kitchen floor in front of the fridge can also come from the water line or the filter housing, so we check both. For a closer look at warm-fridge causes, see why a refrigerator stops cooling.

Why did my GE ice maker or water dispenser stop?

Start by noticing which of the two still works. If the dispenser pours water but there's no ice, the problem is near the ice maker: the ice maker itself, a frozen fill tube, or a freezer that's running too warm. If neither water nor ice comes out, look upstream at the water filter, the inlet valve, or the supply line behind the refrigerator.

Change the filter if it's past six months. That's the cheapest thing on the list, and a clogged one causes slow water and small, hollow cubes. If the water line runs through a cold door on your model, it can freeze, and that usually shows up as water that stops completely while the ice maker keeps working.

What fails on GE, GE Profile and Monogram ovens and ranges?

On gas ovens, the bake igniter is the classic part. As it weakens, preheats get slower and slower, and one day the oven doesn't light. On electric ovens, the bake element, broil element and temperature sensor cover most no-heat and wrong-temperature problems. GE Profile ovens with touch controls sometimes need a control or keypad repair after years of use.

Monogram pro-style ranges use sealed burners with spark ignition, and the problems look like other pro ranges: a burner that won't light, a cap that isn't seated, or nonstop clicking after a spill or a wipe-down. Turn the range off at the breaker and let it dry before calling, since that alone clears a lot of clicking.

One piece of advice we give every November: don't run the self-clean cycle the week before Thanksgiving. The cycle runs the oven extremely hot for hours. If a weak part is going to fail, that's when it happens, and the parts may not arrive before the holiday. More on this on our oven and range repair page.

Is Monogram built-in refrigerator repair different?

A bit. Monogram built-ins are heavy, fit tight into the cabinetry, and some have the compressor and condenser at the top behind the grille instead of at the floor. A clogged top condenser makes the whole unit run long and cool poorly, so we check it on every visit.

Most other work, like the ice maker, evaporator fan and defrost parts, is done from the front with the doors open. Panels and trim go back exactly where they were. For non-GE fridges, see our general refrigerator repair page.

How much does GE repair cost?

The service call is $95 for any GE, GE Profile or Monogram refrigerator or freezer, and $85 for an oven or range. If you go ahead with the repair, that fee is applied toward it. You'll hear the repair price before any work begins, and repairs carry a 90-day parts and labor warranty.

A defrost repair on a GE refrigerator is almost always worth doing. A sealed system failure on an older top-freezer model is a different story, and we'll tell you honestly when replacing makes more sense.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are you part of GE Appliances' service network?

No. We're an independent company doing professional GE, GE Profile and Monogram repair. If your unit is still under the manufacturer's warranty, call GE Appliances first.

Why is my GE refrigerator warm but the freezer cold?

Usually a defrost failure that let frost block the evaporator coil, or a failed evaporator fan. If the fridge works for a week after being unplugged and then warms again, defrost is the likely cause.

Why is there ice on the bottom of my GE freezer?

The defrost drain has likely frozen or clogged, so melted frost refreezes on the freezer floor. Clearing the drain helps for a while, but the reason it froze also has to be fixed.

Do you repair Monogram built-in refrigerators?

Yes. We do professional Monogram repair on built-in refrigerators and pro-style ranges and wall ovens. Most built-in work is done from the front without pulling the unit out.

How much is a GE service call?

$95 for a refrigerator or freezer and $85 for an oven or range. The fee is applied toward the repair, and repairs carry a 90-day parts and labor warranty.
