Why is there standing water in the bottom of my dishwasher?

Standing water means the dirty water can't get out. The usual causes, from simplest to hardest: a clogged filter or food debris in the sump, a kinked or clogged drain hose, a blocked air gap, and — very commonly on a new installation — a garbage-disposal knockout plug that was never removed. A failed drain pump or check valve is the deeper cause when the simple ones check out.

Does the garbage disposal affect my dishwasher draining?

Yes, more than people expect. Most dishwashers drain through the garbage disposal. If a disposal was recently installed, its knockout plug must be removed or the dishwasher can never drain. A clogged disposal will also back water up into the dishwasher, so run and clear the disposal first.

Can I fix a dishwasher that won't drain myself?

Often the first-level checks: remove and rinse the filter, clear food from the sump, run the garbage disposal, and check the drain hose for kinks. Those solve many cases. If water still stands after that, the drain pump, check valve, or control is likely involved and that is a service call.

Is standing water in a dishwasher an emergency?

Not usually, but don't leave it for days — it turns stagnant and smells, and a full tub can overflow onto the floor when you open the door. Bail out the water, try the simple checks, and if it returns, book a repair before it leaks.

Dishwasher Not Draining? Why Water Sits in the Bottom

A little clean water in the sump after a cycle is normal. A pool of dirty, standing water is not — it means the drain path is blocked somewhere. The good news: several of the causes are things you can check in a few minutes. Here's the order we work through them, and where a technician needs to take over. Before You Start

Bail out the standing water with a cup and sponge so you can work. Lay a towel under the door. Then work the list below from top to bottom — it goes from the most common and easiest to the deeper repairs.

1. The Filter and Sump

At the bottom of the tub is a removable filter (twist and lift on most modern dishwashers). Food, glass chips, and grease collect here and choke the drain. Pull it, rinse it under the tap, and clear any debris in the sump well underneath — that's where a chicken bone or fruit sticker likes to hide. This single step fixes a large share of drainage complaints.

2. The Garbage Disposal and Knockout Plug

Most dishwashers drain through the kitchen garbage disposal. Two things go wrong here:

A clogged disposal backs water up into the dishwasher. Run the disposal with the tap on for a few seconds and try the dishwasher again.
The knockout plug. When a disposal is newly installed, it ships with a solid plug in the dishwasher inlet that must be knocked out. If someone skipped that, the dishwasher can never drain — this is the classic “brand-new install won't drain” cause.

3. The Drain Hose and Air Gap

The drain hose runs from the dishwasher to the disposal or sink drain. It can kink behind the machine or clog where it narrows. If your sink has an air gap (the small cylinder on the countertop), unscrew its cap and clear any gunk — a blocked air gap stops draining and often spits water onto the counter.

4. The Drain Pump and Check Valve

If the water path is clear and it still won't drain, the problem is usually electrical or mechanical inside the machine: a drain pump that has failed or is jammed with a shard of glass, or a check valve stuck so water flows back in. You may hear the pump hum without moving water, or hear nothing at all. This is where testing and teardown are needed — our service territory.

Don't Do This

Skip the "run a cycle harder" and heavy chemical drain cleaners — caustic cleaners can damage the pump seals and gaskets and make a cheap repair expensive. Mechanical clearing and the right replacement part is the safe path.

We verify the disposal and knockout, inspect the hose and air gap, then test the drain pump and check valve directly.
