See the limits below. ### Brands and what we may honestly claim We keep this precise, because "authorized" is a legal claim, not a slogan. Factory Authorized: LG, Liebherr, Zephyr, Bertazzoni, Hisense, Speed Queen, Thor Kitchen, ZLINE. See our LG and Liebherr pages. Samsung: repairs are handled by Samsung-certified technicians. Everything else : Sub-Zero, Viking, Thermador, Miele, Bosch, Whirlpool, KitchenAid, GE, Frigidaire, Maytag, Electrolux, Fisher & Paykel and the rest, we repair as experienced independent technicians. No manufacturer credential is claimed for these brands, and no commercial refrigeration brand carries one either. ### What we do not do Knowing what a company turns down is usually more useful than its list of services. New heating and cooling systems and full replacements go through our licensed HVAC partner. Our heating and air conditioning work is limited to minor service and repairs under $1,000. Bigger jobs go to a specialist, we can point you to our partner WY&G Heating and Air . No appliance sales. We do not sell machines, so there is nothing for us to upsell you into. No repair we do not believe in. When a repair costs more than the machine is worth, we say so and charge only the diagnostic, see our guide on repairing versus replacing . No parts on a hunch. If a part must be ordered, you get the price and the wait time before we order it. ### How a visit works You call or text (310) 600-8152 , or send the form on the home page . Tell us the appliance, the brand and what it is doing. We book a time window and confirm by text. Have the model number handy if you can, our short checklist for what to do before the technician arrives speeds up the visit. The technician diagnoses the unit and quotes the exact repair before starting. The service call fee comes off that price when you go ahead. Most repairs finish on the first visit; common parts ride in the van. If a part is ordered, we schedule the return visit when it lands. You pay when the machine works, and the 90-day parts-and-labor warranty is printed on the invoice. We do not publish price lists: every job gets a free estimate over the phone and a firm written quote on-site before any work starts. ### Warranty, in plain terms Every completed repair carries a 90-day warranty on both the parts we installed and the labor. If the same fault comes back inside that window, we come back at no charge. Some manufacturer parts carry longer coverage of their own, and a repair still under a factory warranty is a different animal, our guide to how appliance warranties actually work explains which one applies to you. ### Where we work Irvine is home base, so Irvine, Tustin, Costa Mesa, Newport Beach, Lake Forest and Mission Viejo usually get the earliest slots. We cover the whole of Orange County: Santa Ana, Anaheim, Huntington Beach, Fullerton, Orange, Aliso Viejo, Laguna Niguel, Rancho Santa Margarita, San Clemente and the rest, plus parts of Los Angeles County. Check your ZIP code on the service areas page , or start with Irvine . ### Questions people actually ask #### Is Alpha & Omega licensed and insured? Yes. A few quick checks can rule out simple causes before you call. But sealed-system and compressor issues need a licensed technician, see below for when to stop troubleshooting and pick up the phone. ### Common Refrigerator Repair Problems We Fix #### Fridge not cooling but freezer is fine Often points to a failing evaporator fan or a blocked air duct between the compartments. #### Ice maker not making ice Usually a frozen water line, a bad water inlet valve, or an ice maker module that needs replacing. #### Water dispenser not working The same water inlet valve that feeds the ice maker often feeds the dispenser too, a shared cause is common. #### Frost buildup / defrost failure A failed defrost heater, thermostat, or timer stops the fridge from clearing frost automatically. #### Compressor humming or cycling constantly Can be low refrigerant, a failing compressor, or condenser coils that need cleaning. #### Water pooling inside or underneath Usually a clogged defrost drain, a quick fix once found. ### How It Works 1 Call or Text Reach us in under 2 minutes, tell us what's going on and where you're located in Orange County. 2 We Diagnose On-Site A technician comes to you, inspects the appliance, and gives you an honest, upfront price before touching anything. 3 Fixed the Same Visit Most repairs are completed in one visit. If a part needs to be ordered, we'll tell you exactly what to expect. ### Quick Checks You Can Try First Make sure vents inside the fridge aren't blocked by food items, blocked airflow is a very common cause of uneven cooling. Check that the door seal/gasket is making full contact all the way around, a $5 bill test works: if it slides out easily with the door shut, the seal may be worn. Clean dust off the condenser coils (usually behind a bottom kick-plate or on the back of the unit), buildup makes the compressor work harder. Confirm the thermostat/temperature setting hasn't been bumped accidentally. ### Call a Pro Right Away If You See This Not cooling at all despite clear vents and a good door seal Compressor humming loudly or short-cycling on and off Water leaking under or inside the unit Ice maker overflowing or completely stopped Frost covering the freezer walls (defrost system failure) Call Now Text Us ### Brands We Service Samsung LG GE Whirlpool Sub-Zero Liebherr Based in Irvine, same-day refrigerator repair is the norm there: see the dedicated refrigerator repair Irvine page and, next door, refrigerator repair in Tustin and refrigerator repair in Lake Forest . Fridge warm right now? Start with the refrigerator not cooling guide . Ice keeps coming back in the freezer? Read frost building up in your freezer , where the frost forms tells you whether it is the door seal, the drain or the defrost system. Buzzing, clicking or squealing instead? Refrigerator making strange noises matches each sound to the part that makes it. Too cold rather than too warm? Refrigerator freezing food in the fresh-food section covers the air damper, the thermistor and the vent airstream. If it is the freezer that runs too cold, or the compressor runs nonstop or clicks on and off every few minutes, freezer too cold or cycling oddly goes through the thermistor, the defrost control and the start relay. Not broken yet? Our refrigerator maintenance checklist covers the coils, gaskets, defrost drain and filter schedule that prevent most of these calls. ### Common Questions About Refrigerator Repair How much does refrigerator repair cost in Orange County? We work out of Irvine, so a same-day visit is often possible, and a refrigerator that has stopped cooling gets priority. The technician quotes the repair on site before any work starts, and every repair carries a 90-day parts and labor warranty. If the fridge is warm right now, keep the doors shut, move the most perishable food to a cooler, and read what to check before you call . When a refrigerator stops cooling, the clock starts: per USDA guidance a closed refrigerator keeps food safe for about four hours. Alpha & Omega is a family-owned repair company that has worked in Orange County since 2005 and is based in Irvine , so refrigerator calls from Woodbridge, Northwood, University Park, Turtle Rock, Woodbury, Orchard Hills, Portola Springs and the Great Park neighborhoods are local runs for us. Call (310) 600-8152 or text us the brand, the model number and what the refrigerator is doing, that lets the technician arrive with the most likely parts. ### What Irvine Kitchens Have: and What Fails in Them Irvine was built village by village over five decades, and the refrigerator in a house tends to match the era of the village. More about the neighborhoods is on our Irvine service area page . #### Great Park, Portola Springs, Orchard Hills, Cypress Village, Stonegate Most homes here were built from the 2000s on and came with a builder appliance package. The refrigerator is usually a counter-depth French-door model or a 36-inch built-in, and in upgraded kitchens a panel-ready unit or a pair of refrigerator and freezer columns hidden behind cabinet doors. These refrigerators rarely fail from wear in the first years. What we see instead are electronic and airflow problems: evaporator fans that stop, defrost sensors and heaters that let the evaporator ice over, ice makers that jam, and control boards that throw error codes. If your home is only a year or two old, check the manufacturer's warranty before paying for a repair, understanding appliance warranties explains what to look for. #### Woodbridge, Northwood, Westpark and the 1980s–90s villages Most of these kitchens have a freestanding refrigerator that has been replaced at least once, often squeezed into a cabinet opening that was sized for a smaller, older model. A tight fit matters: a refrigerator with no air gap above and behind it pushes its compressor and condenser fan harder, and the problem usually shows up on the first hot week of summer. Condenser fan motors, start relays and compressors that run nonstop are typical calls in these neighborhoods. #### University Park, Turtle Rock, Culverdale, Deerfield, College Park The first Irvine villages date from the late 1960s and 1970s, and many kitchens have been remodeled more than once. We find everything from a standard freestanding refrigerator to full remodels with a built-in unit. Built-in refrigerators are fitted to their opening, and a replacement of a different brand or size often means cabinet work. That is why repair is frequently the better choice for a built-in that is otherwise in good condition. #### Apartments, condos and Irvine Company communities Many Irvine renters live in apartment communities owned and managed by the Irvine Company or other large owners. If you rent, your lease almost always routes appliance repairs through property management, call the leasing office first, because a repair you arrange yourself may not be reimbursed. We work for homeowners, condo and townhome owners, landlords and property managers. When the owner books us, we coordinate access with the tenant and leave an itemized invoice the owner or HOA can file. ### Built-In and Panel-Ready Refrigerators A built-in or panel-ready refrigerator is not just a freestanding model with a cabinet door on it. The layout is different, and so is the repair: The machinery is often on top. Many built-in models put the compressor, condenser and condenser fan in a compartment above the doors, behind the top grille. The condenser collects dust there just like one at floor level, but nobody sees it, so it rarely gets cleaned. Most service is done from the front. These units are designed to be serviced in place. When a unit does have to come forward, it is anchored against tipping and carries heavy custom panels, so moving it is a technician job, done with the floor and cabinets protected. Columns are separate appliances. A refrigerator column and a freezer column side by side each have their own compressor and controls. If the freezer column is warm and the refrigerator column is fine, the problem is in that one unit. Some models have two cooling systems. Certain built-ins use separate sealed systems for the fresh-food and freezer sections, so one section can fail while the other keeps working. That changes how the problem is diagnosed. Servicing the top machine compartment of a built-in refrigerator. On many built-in models the condenser and fan live up here, out of sight. We are experienced with built-in Sub-Zero , Thermador, Viking and Miele refrigerators, and we are Factory Authorized for Liebherr , whose integrated and column models turn up in Irvine remodels. A photo of the model and serial tag saves a lot of time. On most built-ins it is inside the fresh-food section, on the ceiling or an upper side wall, or behind the top grille. ### Garage Refrigerators and Freezers A second refrigerator or a chest freezer in the garage is common in Irvine homes, especially for families who shop in bulk. A garage is a harder place for a refrigerator than a kitchen: Summer heat. An Irvine garage gets much hotter than the house on a warm afternoon, and even hotter on a west-facing wall. The compressor runs longer to keep up, and a marginal start relay or condenser fan fails sooner. Cool winter nights. Many household refrigerators are designed for indoor room temperatures. On some models with a single thermostat in the fresh-food section, a cold garage means that section stops calling for cooling, and the freezer section warms up with it. The owner's manual lists the ambient temperature range the model is designed for. Dust. Garages are dusty, and a clogged condenser is one of the most common reasons a garage refrigerator runs warm. Power. Garage outlets are often GFCI-protected. A tripped GFCI outlet, sometimes on a different wall or in a bathroom on the same circuit, can quietly shut off a freezer full of food. Plug the unit straight into the wall, not into an extension cord or power strip. For more on freezer-specific problems, see our freezer not cooling guide , or frost building up in your freezer if the freezer still freezes but ice keeps returning. If the complaint is noise rather than temperature, refrigerator making strange noises walks through clicking, buzzing, knocking and squealing one sound at a time. And if the fridge is running too cold instead of too warm, refrigerator freezing food in the fresh-food section explains why the setting is rarely the whole story. When someone has already said the word compressor, read refrigerator compressor problems first: the start relay and overload protector fail far more often than the compressor they are bolted to. ### Refrigerator Symptoms and What They Usually Mean Not cooling, but lights and display work , a dirty condenser, a stopped condenser or evaporator fan, a failed start relay, or a defrost failure that has iced over the evaporator. A compressor or sealed-system failure is possible but less common. Start with our refrigerator not cooling guide . Freezer cold, refrigerator warm , on most models cold air reaches the fresh-food section from the freezer through a fan and duct. Frost blocking that path, a failed evaporator fan or a stuck damper is the usual cause. Frost on the back wall of the freezer , the automatic defrost system is not doing its job: a defrost heater, sensor, thermostat or control. Water on the floor or under the crisper drawers , most often a frozen or clogged defrost drain, sometimes a water supply line or fitting. See refrigerator leaking water . No ice or slow ice , a frozen fill tube, a water inlet valve, a clogged water filter, or an ice maker module. See ice maker not working . Clicking, buzzing or rattling , a start relay trying to start the compressor, a fan blade hitting ice, or a loose drain pan. Runs all the time and still warm , can be airflow or a dirty condenser; if those are fine, it may be a refrigerant leak or a weak compressor. That is sealed system repair territory and needs a technician with the right equipment. Error code on the display , write it down or take a photo. Codes differ by brand and model, and the code helps us bring the right parts. A freezer evaporator opened up during a defrost system repair. When defrost fails, ice builds up here and blocks the airflow that cools the refrigerator. ### What You Can Safely Check Before You Call The real temperature. Put an appliance thermometer in a glass of water on a middle shelf and leave it a few hours. The target is 37°F in the refrigerator and 0°F in the freezer. That number helps a lot on the phone. Power and GFCI outlets. Check the breaker and press the reset button on any GFCI outlet on the circuit. Vents inside. Make sure food is not pressed against the air vents in the freezer or fresh-food section. The condenser. With the refrigerator unplugged, vacuum the grille and the dust you can reach. Our refrigerator maintenance checklist shows how and how often. Door seals. Close a sheet of paper in the door at several spots. If it slides out with no resistance, the gasket is not sealing there. Settings. Check that the unit is not in showroom, demo, vacation or Sabbath mode, which can stop cooling or change how it runs. ### What Not to Do Do not chip ice off the evaporator with a knife or screwdriver. One hole in the tubing turns a defrost repair into a sealed-system repair. Do not pull a built-in or panel-ready refrigerator out of its opening yourself, it is anchored, heavy and connected to a water line. Do not keep unplugging and replugging a refrigerator that clicks and won't start. Repeated start attempts are hard on the compressor. Do not use a heat gun or hair dryer on plastic liners to melt ice. Leaving the unit unplugged with the doors open, and the food moved to coolers, is safer. Do not buy a "recharge kit." A refrigerator that is low on refrigerant has a leak, and it needs a diagnosis, not a top-up. ### Refrigerator Brands We Repair in Irvine We are Factory Authorized for LG , Liebherr and Hisense , and our technicians are Samsung-certified, see Samsung appliance repair . Tell us the brand, the model number, what the refrigerator is doing and your Irvine neighborhood. A technician diagnoses on site and quotes the repair before any work starts. Nothing is replaced until you approve it. Many repairs are finished on the first visit. Parts for built-in and premium models often ship from the manufacturer; if a part has to be ordered, we tell you when it is expected and schedule the return trip then. Every repair carries a 90-day parts and labor warranty. If the refrigerator is old enough that you are weighing the decision, our repair or replace guide shows how we think about it, and if a repair does not make sense, the technician will say so. Our before the technician arrives checklist saves time on the visit. Hosting Thanksgiving? A full refrigerator works harder, so it is worth checking temperatures a week or two before, along with your oven . ### Frequently Asked Questions #### Can you repair my refrigerator in Irvine today? Often, yes. We work out of Irvine, so Irvine addresses are the first stops on our route, and a refrigerator that has stopped cooling gets priority because food is at stake. Call (310) 600-8152 as early in the day as you can. Same-day is not guaranteed; if today is full we will tell you so and give you the first real slot. #### My built-in or panel-ready refrigerator is warm but the lights and display work. What usually causes that? On built-in units the most common causes are a condenser clogged with dust (the condenser sits behind the top or bottom grille and is easy to forget), a condenser or evaporator fan that has stopped, or a defrost problem that has iced over the evaporator. A failed sealed system is less common. The lights and display run even when the cooling side has stopped, so a lit display does not mean the refrigerator is healthy. #### Can a refrigerator or freezer in an Irvine garage work properly? It can, but a garage is harder on it than a kitchen. Many household refrigerators are designed for indoor room temperatures, so a hot summer garage makes the compressor run much longer, and on some single-thermostat models a cold winter night can let the freezer section warm up because the fresh-food side stops calling for cooling. Check the owner's manual for the recommended temperature range, keep the condenser clean, and plug it directly into the wall, not into an extension cord. #### I rent from the Irvine Company or another property manager. Can I book you directly? Call your property management office first. Most Irvine leases route appliance repairs through management, and a repair you arrange yourself may not be reimbursed. When the owner or property manager books us, we coordinate access with you and leave an itemized invoice for the owner. #### Which refrigerator brands do you repair in Irvine? All major brands. We are Factory Authorized for LG, Liebherr and Hisense, our technicians are Samsung-certified, and we are experienced with built-in Sub-Zero, Thermador, Viking and Miele refrigerators. We also professionally service GE, GE Profile, Monogram, Café, KitchenAid, JennAir, Whirlpool, Frigidaire, Maytag and Bosch. #### My fridge stopped cooling: is my food safe, and how is the repair priced? Per USDA guidance a closed refrigerator keeps food safe for about 4 hours, and a full freezer holds for about 48 hours (about 24 if half full). Keep the doors shut and call right away. The technician diagnoses the refrigerator and quotes the repair on site before any work starts, and every repair carries a 90-day parts and labor warranty. ### Beyond Irvine We repair refrigerators in Tustin , Lake Forest , Mission Viejo , Laguna Hills , Aliso Viejo and the rest of South Orange County, see the county-wide refrigerator repair page . Sealed System & Compressor Repair | Orange County, CA Home › Sealed System & Compressor Repair Alpha & Omega HVAC Appliance Repair · Orange County, CA ## Sealed System & Compressor Repair: the Refrigerator Job Most Companies Turn Away ### Quick answer The sealed system is the refrigerator's closed refrigerant loop, compressor, condenser, filter drier and evaporator, and when it fails most repair companies tell you to buy a new fridge. We do this work: our technicians hold the EPA Section 608 Universal certification required to recover and handle refrigerant, so we can find the leak, replace the compressor or drier, evacuate and recharge the system. We give a free estimate over the phone, and the refrigerator service call is applied toward the repair once you approve an exact price, and the repair carries a 90-day parts and labor warranty, see refrigerator repair for everything outside the sealed system. When a refrigerator's sealed system fails, many repair companies simply say "buy a new fridge", because sealed system work requires certified refrigerant handling, brazing equipment, and real diagnostic experience. Our technicians hold the EPA Section 608 Universal certification , the federal license to recover and handle refrigerant on any system, and we do this work across Orange County, including on built-in and luxury refrigerators where replacement would cost many thousands of dollars. ### What the Sealed System Is The sealed system is your refrigerator's closed refrigeration loop: the compressor pumps refrigerant (commonly R600a in modern units, R134a in older ones) through the condenser coil , past a filter drier , through a capillary tube into the evaporator coil , where it absorbs heat from inside the cabinet. If any part of this loop fails, or refrigerant leaks out, no amount of fan, thermostat, or control board work will bring the cold back. ### Signs of a Sealed System Problem Fridge and freezer both warm, while fans run and the compressor is hot or runs constantly Repeated clicking from the compressor start relay, then silence A partial frost pattern on the evaporator coil, frost on only the first section is a classic low-charge symptom Slow decline over weeks: food spoils sooner, ice cream stays soft, temperatures creep up Oil residue near the compressor or a faint chemical smell (possible leak point) Not sure it's the sealed system? Start with our refrigerator-not-cooling checklist , several cheaper causes (coils, fans, defrost) mimic these symptoms, and we always rule them out first. ### What Our Repair Includes Real diagnosis first: evaporator frost-pattern inspection, compressor amp-draw and start-component testing, and system pressure evaluation, so you never pay for a compressor you didn't need. Leak detection and repair at joints, coils, and heat-exchanger sections. Compressor replacement , including modern inverter and LG linear compressors (see our Factory Authorized LG repair page , and how we confirm an LG compressor really failed before replacing one). For any brand, refrigerator compressor problems: start relay vs compressor explains which symptoms actually point at the compressor and which point at the small parts clipped to its side. Filter drier replacement , mandatory every time the system is opened, to protect the new compressor from moisture. Deep evacuation (vacuuming) of the system to remove air and moisture. Precise recharge with the exact refrigerant type and weight specified by the manufacturer, followed by temperature verification before we leave. ⚠️ Safety note: modern refrigerators use R600a (isobutane), a flammable refrigerant. Opening the sealed system without proper equipment and EPA-compliant refrigerant handling is dangerous and illegal to vent. This is strictly a professional repair. ### Repair or Replace? A sealed system repair makes the most sense on built-in and high-end units (Sub-Zero, Liebherr, Thermador, Monogram, where a replacement unit costs many times the repair), on refrigerators under roughly 10 years old, and whenever the compressor is still under a manufacturer parts warranty. For an older basic-model fridge, we'll tell you honestly when replacement is the smarter money, see our repair-or-replace guide . ### Serving All of Orange County We handle sealed system calls in Irvine, Newport Beach, Anaheim, Santa Ana, Huntington Beach, and across Orange County . Same-day diagnosis is usually available, and because we quote before any work begins, you'll know exactly where you stand. ### Frequently Asked Questions #### What is a refrigerator sealed system? The sealed system is the closed refrigeration loop: compressor, condenser coil, filter drier, capillary tube (or expansion device), and evaporator coil, charged with refrigerant such as R600a or R134a. It's 'sealed' because the refrigerant circulates in a closed circuit, opening it requires certified equipment for recovery, brazing, evacuation, and recharge. #### Is a compressor replacement worth it? Often yes, especially on built-in and high-end refrigerators, and on newer units where the rest of the appliance has years of life left. On some models the compressor is covered by a long manufacturer parts warranty (LG, for example, has covered linear compressors for up to 10 years), which can dramatically reduce the cost. We check warranty coverage before quoting. #### Can I fix a refrigerant leak myself? No, sealed system work is not a DIY repair. Handling refrigerants requires EPA-compliant recovery equipment, and the repair involves brazing, replacing the filter drier, pulling a deep vacuum, and weighing in an exact refrigerant charge. Done wrong, it destroys the compressor. This is exactly the job we specialize in. #### Refrigerator Warm and Nobody Wants the Job? Sealed system diagnosis and repair, call or text us. Technician checking a central AC condenser unit at a home When an Orange County summer hits triple digits inland, a dead air conditioner stops being a comfort problem and starts being a health one, especially in a house with kids, seniors, or pets. We repair residential air conditioning systems across Irvine and Orange County: central AC, heat pumps, mini-splits, and package units. Same-day service is usually available, and we carry the parts that fail most often, capacitors, contactors, and fan motors, on the truck. ### AC Problems We Fix AC running but blowing warm air , the most common summer call. Usually a failed run capacitor, a burned contactor, a stuck condenser fan, or low refrigerant from a leak. AC won't turn on at all , tripped breaker, blown low-voltage fuse on the control board, failed thermostat, or a safety switch that opened (often the condensate float). Ice on the refrigerant line or indoor coil , restricted airflow from a clogged filter or dirty coil, a weak blower, or an undercharged system. Shut it off and run the fan only; running it iced can destroy the compressor. Water leaking from the indoor unit , a clogged condensate drain line, cracked drain pan, or a frozen coil melting off. Common in Orange County, where dust and algae plug drain lines every couple of seasons. Weak airflow from the vents , dirty filter, failing blower motor or capacitor, collapsed flex duct, or a badly leaking duct run in the attic. Outside unit hums but the fan doesn't spin , classic failed capacitor or seized condenser fan motor. Don't let it keep humming; that's hard on the compressor. Short cycling , the system starts and stops every few minutes. Can be an oversized system, a dirty coil, low charge, or a failing pressure switch. Breaker trips every time the AC starts , a hard-starting compressor, a shorted fan motor, or a genuine electrical fault. Stop resetting it and get it diagnosed. Burning or musty smell when it runs , overheating motor, or mold in the evaporator/drain pan. Loud grinding, screeching, or rattling , failing motor bearings, a loose blower wheel, or debris in the condenser. ### Quick Checks Before You Call Set the thermostat to COOL and drop it 5° below room temperature, a system in AUTO or FAN-ON confuses a lot of diagnoses. Replace a dirty filter. A clogged filter causes more no-cool calls than any single part. Check the breaker, and note whether there are two: one for the indoor air handler, one for the outdoor condenser. Look at the outdoor unit: is the fan spinning, and is the coil packed with dust, leaves, or cottonwood? Check the thermostat batteries if the screen is blank. ⚠️ Stop and call: if you smell burning, see scorch marks at the disconnect or contactor, hear the breaker trip repeatedly, or find ice on the lines. Refrigerant work is EPA-regulated and requires a certified technician, never attempt to add refrigerant yourself; topping off a leaking system just wastes money and vents refrigerant. ### What a Repair Visit Looks Like We confirm the symptom, then check thermostat calls, voltage at the disconnect, and the control board, not just the obvious part. We take refrigerant pressures and temperature split before quoting anything sealed-system related. You get the price before we start. No surprise line items afterwards. Common parts, capacitors, contactors, fan motors, float switches, thermostats, are on the truck, so most repairs finish the same visit. Repairs carry a 90-day warranty on parts & labor , with up to 5 years on select parts, confirmed on-site by the technician. ### Systems & Brands We Service Central split systems, heat pumps, ductless mini-splits, and package units: Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem, American Standard, Bryant, York, Daikin, Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, LG, and most other brands you'll find on an Orange County roof or side yard. Our technicians are EPA Section 608 Universal certified for refrigerant work. ### Service Area Air conditioning repair in Irvine (we're based there), Tustin , Lake Forest , Mission Viejo , Costa Mesa , Newport Beach , Anaheim , Santa Ana , Huntington Beach , Orange , and throughout Orange County , each city page covers the AC problems we see most there. Nine times out of ten it's one of four things: a failed run capacitor, a burned contactor, a condenser fan that isn't spinning, or low refrigerant from a leak. A technician can tell them apart in minutes by checking the capacitor, the voltage at the contactor, and the pressures, but only the first three are cheap fixes, so it's worth diagnosing rather than guessing. #### How fast can you get out for AC repair in Orange County? Same-day service is usually available, and in a July heat wave we try to prioritize households with seniors, infants, or medical needs. Call (310) 600-8152 and tell us what the system is doing. #### Is it worth repairing an old AC or should I replace it? Rough rule: if the system is under 10 years old, repair almost always wins. Past 12–15 years, if it's on R-22 refrigerant, or if the compressor itself has failed, replacement usually makes more financial sense. We'll tell you honestly which side of that line your system is on, we don't sell you a system you don't need. #### Can you just add refrigerant to my AC? Refrigerant doesn't get used up, if it's low, there's a leak. We can add charge to get you cooling today, but without finding and fixing the leak you'll be calling again in a few months, and venting refrigerant is against EPA rules. We'd rather locate the leak. #### Do you cover the repair with a warranty? Yes, 90 days on parts and labor as our baseline, and up to 5 years on select parts. Your technician confirms the exact coverage on-site before the work starts. #### No Cold Air? Don't Wait Out the Heat. Same-day AC service is usually available across Orange County. If the oven does not respond at all, no display and no beep, read why an oven will not turn on first, because that is a power or lockout fault rather than a heating one. Already dealing with a cold oven that powers up? Start with why an oven is not heating , igniter, bake element, temperature sensor and control board, and how the symptoms tell them apart. If it heats but runs cool or browns unevenly, oven temperature problems covers measuring the real cavity temperature and what the calibration offset can and cannot fix. If the oven died mid-cook on the day itself, what to do if your oven stops working on Thanksgiving Day is the emergency version: triage order, the breaker reset, the locked door, and how to get dinner finished anyway. On a gas range, a bang when the oven lights or a gas smell that lingers past a couple of seconds is a different matter, see what a gas smell or a loud pop at ignition means and stop using the oven until it is checked. If the utility has already visited, found the line sound and pointed at the appliance, what to do when the gas company says it is the stove covers the next step. Burner trouble on the top of the range is its own thing, and a gas burner that will not light or burns yellow covers the caps, electrodes, blocked ports and air supply behind it. One more thing before the holidays: the high-heat self-clean cycle is the most common reason a working oven dies in late November, and should you self-clean the oven before Thanksgiving explains what it breaks and what to do instead. If a part needs to be ordered, we'll tell you exactly what to expect. ### Quick Checks You Can Try First Confirm the breaker hasn't tripped (electric ovens/ranges). Check that racks, a temperature probe, or foil liner aren't interfering with the door seal. Make sure burner caps and grates are seated correctly after cleaning, a misaligned cap is a common cause of a burner that won't catch. ### Call a Pro Right Away If You See This A gas smell near the range, leave the house and call a professional immediately, don't attempt to relight anything yourself Igniter clicking repeatedly with no flame Oven not reaching temperature despite correct settings Visible sparking anywhere on the unit Control panel unresponsive or throwing error codes Call Now Text Us ### Brands We Service GE Samsung Whirlpool Wolf Viking Bosch ### Common Questions About Oven / Range Repair How much does oven / range repair cost in Orange County? We prioritize commercial refrigeration calls because product loss gets expensive by the hour. Same-day service is usually available across Orange County, call (310) 600-8152 and tell us it's a commercial unit. #### Do you repair ice machines? Yes, we service commercial ice machines, including Scotsman and Hoshizaki units: low or no ice production, scale buildup, water valve and pump issues, and refrigeration-side problems. #### Why does my commercial refrigerator keep running but not holding temperature? In commercial kitchens the most common causes are condenser coils clogged with kitchen grease and dust, worn door gaskets on heavily used doors, evaporator icing from failed defrost, or low refrigerant charge from a leak. Grease-clogged condensers are the #1 preventable failure we see, regular coil cleaning prevents most emergency calls. #### You're not factory-authorized on commercial brands: can you still work on our equipment? Yes. We're independent commercial refrigeration technicians, not a factory-authorized service center for any commercial brand, we say so plainly. Compressors, controls, gaskets, condensers, evaporators and defrost systems work the same way across most manufacturers, so we service True, Traulsen, Beverage-Air, Turbo Air, Scotsman, Hoshizaki and most other commercial brands you'll find in an Orange County kitchen. #### Will a broken walk-in cooler or reach-in cause us to fail a health inspection? It can. Most Orange County health inspectors require cold-holding at 41°F or below; a unit running warm is a citable violation, and repeated or severe violations can lead to a closure. Inspectors also check that thermometers are placed correctly and that temperature logs are current, often the paperwork trips up a kitchen as much as the equipment. If a unit is holding warm, treat it as inspection-risk, not just an inconvenience, and get it looked at same day. #### How much does a commercial service call cost? Our commercial service call is free for businesses near our Irvine base and a flat fee elsewhere in Orange County. It covers the technician visit and diagnosis and is applied toward the repair when you approve the work, you get an exact quote before anything begins, with no surprise charges. ### Browse by Equipment Type Commercial Freezer Repair , walk-in & reach-in freezers, blast chillers Commercial Refrigerator & Walk-In Cooler Repair , fresh-food reach-ins, walk-in coolers, prep tables Commercial Ice Machine Repair , no ice, low ice, cloudy ice, leaks Commercial HVAC & Rooftop AC Repair , rooftop package units, restaurant and office cooling See our full commercial refrigeration maintenance & troubleshooting guide for temperature standards, symptom-by-symptom troubleshooting, and the maintenance schedule that prevents most emergency calls. ### Browse by City Commercial Refrigeration Repair in Irvine, CA Commercial Refrigeration Repair in Lake Forest, CA Commercial Refrigeration Repair in Tustin, CA Commercial Refrigeration Repair in Laguna Hills, CA Commercial Refrigeration Repair in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA Commercial Refrigeration Repair in Mission Viejo, CA Commercial Refrigeration Repair in Anaheim, CA Commercial Refrigeration Repair in Santa Ana, CA Commercial Refrigeration Repair in Costa Mesa, CA Commercial Refrigeration Repair in Newport Beach, CA Commercial Refrigeration Repair in Huntington Beach, CA Commercial Refrigeration Repair in Orange, CA ### Service Area Commercial refrigeration service in Irvine, Santa Ana, Anaheim, Costa Mesa, Newport Beach, Tustin, and throughout Orange County . Call Now Text Us Servicing a built-in refrigerator from its top machine compartment. Many newer Irvine kitchens have built-in or counter-depth refrigerators whose condenser sits behind a grille instead of at the back of the box. Irvine is our home base. Alpha & Omega is family-owned, has been repairing appliances in Orange County since 2005, and works out of Irvine, so the villages here are the first streets on our route every morning. That matters for one practical reason: if you call before noon, a same-day window in Irvine is usually open. It is not a guarantee. Some days fill early. If today is already full we will say so on the phone and give you the first real slot instead of a vague promise. Irvine is also an unusual city to repair appliances in. It was laid out as a master-planned community by the Irvine Company, incorporated in 1971, and grew village by village over five decades. The result is that the age of a house is closely tied to the village it sits in, and with it the age of the wiring, plumbing, ductwork and appliance cutouts. University Park and Turtle Rock were among the first villages, built from the late 1960s through the 1970s. Woodbridge and Northwood filled in from the late 1970s into the 1990s. Quail Hill, Portola Springs, Orchard Hills, Cypress Village, Stonegate and the Great Park neighborhoods are mostly 2000s and newer, and the Great Park homes stand on the land of the former El Toro Marine Corps Air Station. When you tell us your village, we already have a good idea what kind of refrigerator nook, oven cutout and furnace location we are walking into. Most of our Irvine calls come down to three things, in this order: refrigerators and freezers that stop holding temperature, air conditioners that struggle through late-summer heat and fall Santa Ana wind days, and ovens and ranges , especially in October and November, when a wall oven that gets light use all year suddenly has to cook a Thanksgiving turkey. This page covers what we see in each, what you can safely check yourself, and when it is time to call. ### Irvine Neighborhoods We Serve We cover all nine Irvine ZIP codes: 92602, 92603, 92604, 92606, 92612, 92614, 92617, 92618 and 92620. That takes in Woodbridge, Northwood and Northwood Pointe, Northpark, Turtle Rock, Shady Canyon, Quail Hill, University Park, Rancho San Joaquin, Westpark, Oak Creek, Walnut Village, El Camino Real, Deerfield, College Park, Woodbury, Stonegate, Cypress Village, Orchard Hills, Portola Springs, the Great Park neighborhoods (Beacon Park, Pavilion Park, Parasol Park and the newer tracts around them), the apartment communities around the Irvine Spectrum and the Irvine Business Complex, and University Hills and the other housing around UC Irvine. ### What Irvine Homes Actually Call Us About #### The first villages: University Park, Turtle Rock, Culverdale, Deerfield, College Park Kitchens in these homes were designed around appliances that were smaller than today’s. The most common refrigerator problem we find here is not a failed part at all. It is a modern, taller, deeper refrigerator squeezed into a cabinet opening built for a 1970s model, with no room above or behind it to breathe. A refrigerator gets rid of heat through its condenser. Boxed in, it runs hotter and longer, the compressor and condenser fan work harder, and the fresh-food side starts drifting warm on hot afternoons. Before anyone replaces a part, we check clearance, the condenser coil and the condenser fan. Second refrigerators and chest freezers in the garage are common here too, and an Irvine garage in August gets hot enough to push an older unit past what it was designed for. Heating and cooling in these homes is usually a furnace in a hall closet or the garage with a cooling coil on top of it and an outdoor unit in the side yard, and most systems have been replaced at least once. The calls we get are clogged filters, dirty coils, condensate lines that back up and leak onto the floor, and worn capacitors and contactors in the outdoor unit. #### Woodbridge, Northwood, Westpark and the villages of the 1980s and 1990s Two-story houses, and a lot of townhomes and condos with shared walls and HOA-managed common areas. Here the classic AC complaint is the second floor: the system runs, downstairs is comfortable, upstairs is not. Sometimes that is airflow: a dirty filter, a blocked return grille, a disconnected or crushed duct in the attic. Sometimes the system has lost capacity. We check airflow before anything else, because it is the simplest thing to fix and it is often the whole story. In townhome complexes the outdoor units are frequently lined up along a narrow side yard or on a shared pad, and HOA rules on work hours, parking and access to common areas apply. We work with HOAs and property managers regularly and plan the visit around those rules. #### Quail Hill, Portola Springs, Orchard Hills, Cypress Village, Stonegate and the Great Park neighborhoods Most of these homes came with a builder appliance package: a matched refrigerator, range or wall ovens and a hood from one manufacturer. Many have counter-depth or built-in-style refrigerators and double wall ovens. Newer appliances fail differently from old ones: fewer worn-out mechanical parts, more electronic controls, temperature sensors, fan motors, and ice maker and water valve problems. If your home is only a year or two old, the appliance may still be under the manufacturer’s warranty, so check before you pay for anything. Start with understanding appliance warranties . In many newer two-story homes the furnace or air handler is in the attic. Water from the cooling coil drains through a condensate line, and below the unit there is usually a secondary drain pan, often with a float switch that shuts the system down if water starts collecting. When an attic system suddenly stops cooling on a hot day, a clogged condensate line that tripped that switch is one of the first things we look at. That beats water coming through the ceiling. Smart and communicating thermostats are common here too, and a thermostat setting or wiring problem can look exactly like a broken air conditioner. Our guide on an AC that won’t turn on covers the checks. #### Apartments, condos and rentals A large share of Irvine residents rent, and many of the city’s apartment communities are owned and managed by the Irvine Company. If you rent, your lease almost always says appliance repairs go through property management. Call them first, because a repair you arrange yourself may not be reimbursed. We work for homeowners, condo and townhome owners, landlords and property managers, and we are glad to coordinate access with a tenant when the owner books us. ### Refrigerators and Freezers: Our Most Common Irvine Call A refrigerator that is “a little warm” rarely fixes itself, and the symptom usually points to the cause: Freezer cold, fresh-food side warm : most often a freezer coil that has iced over because the defrost system failed, an evaporator fan that stopped, or an air damper stuck closed. Freezer not cooling and refrigerator not cooling explain the difference, and frost building up in your freezer covers how to tell a failed defrost system from a leaking door seal. If it started buzzing or rattling before it warmed up, what each refrigerator noise means is the faster read. The opposite complaint, a fresh-food section that freezes produce and milk , usually comes down to the air damper or the compartment thermistor. And if the fridge clicks and hums every few minutes instead of cooling, start relay versus compressor explains why that sound rarely means a new refrigerator. A freezer that runs far below 0°F, or cycles on and off every few minutes, is a control problem rather than a cooling one: freezer too cold or cycling oddly walks through the thermistor, the adaptive defrost board and the relay at the compressor. Both sections warm : a dirty condenser coil or failed condenser fan, a start relay or compressor problem, or a genuine sealed-system fault such as a refrigerant leak. Sealed system repair is work only a technician should do. Water on the floor or under the crisper drawers : a frozen or clogged defrost drain, a leaking water line or inlet valve, or a cracked filter housing. See refrigerator leaking water . Ice maker stopped or making small, hollow cubes : low water flow from an overdue filter, a failing inlet valve, or a frozen fill tube. Much of Orange County’s water is hard enough to leave mineral scale in valves and filters, so filter changes on schedule matter here. Ice maker not working . What you can safely check yourself: the temperature settings (someone may have bumped them), whether the door gaskets seal all the way around, whether the refrigerator has room to breathe above and behind it, and whether you can hear the fans running. With the refrigerator unplugged, you can vacuum the condenser coil if it is reachable. Anything involving refrigerant, the compressor or electrical parts is a job for a technician. Our refrigerator maintenance checklist covers the routine care that prevents most of these calls, and refrigerator repair in Irvine explains how we handle the visit. A defrost system repair. A freezer coil buried in frost is behind many “freezer cold, fridge warm” calls. The fan can no longer push cold air through it. ### Air Conditioning in Irvine: Late-Summer Heat and Santa Ana Days Irvine summer afternoons are usually warm rather than extreme, but September and October bring heat waves and Santa Ana wind days, and the villages farther from the coast, toward the foothills and the Great Park, typically run warmer than the ones closer to it. Those are the days an air conditioner that was barely keeping up finally gives out. The failures we see most: Outdoor unit hums but the fan doesn’t spin : frequently a failed capacitor. Turn the system off at the thermostat and call. Don’t poke at the unit. Ice on the refrigerant lines or indoor coil : usually restricted airflow from a dirty filter or coil, sometimes low refrigerant. Switch the system to fan-only to let it thaw. See AC freezing up . Water leaking from the indoor unit : a clogged condensate drain or a cracked pan. See AC leaking water . Turns on and off every few minutes : short cycling. In the two-story homes here it is often a float switch stopping an attic air handler because the condensate drain is clogged. It can also be a thermostat in the sun, a clogged filter, a weak capacitor or a compressor overheating. See AC short cycling . Runs all day but the air isn’t cold : dirty filter or coils, an outdoor coil packed with dust and debris after a wind event, or a system that has lost refrigerant. See AC not cooling and AC blowing warm air . Santa Ana winds load outdoor coils and indoor filters with dust much faster than normal, so it is worth checking the filter after a windy week. And one rule we never bend: low refrigerant always means a leak somewhere. Adding refrigerant without finding the leak only postpones the same problem. The leak has to be found and diagnosed first. We handle minor AC service and repairs in Irvine. See AC repair in Irvine and our AC tune-up . New systems and full replacements go to a licensed installer. The routine that prevents most of these calls is in our AC maintenance checklist for Southern California homes : filter schedule, coil rinsing, condensate drain and a spring test run. Heating season here is short and it arrives all at once. The furnace sits unused from April to November, then the temperature drops into the forties one evening and everyone reaches for the thermostat on the same night. The faults that show up are usually small: a matted filter, a thermostat left with the fan on ON, a flame sensor that built a film of oxide last winter, a cracked hot surface igniter. Test the heat on a warm October afternoon instead of finding out in December. Furnace not heating walks the full ignition sequence and the blink codes, and HVAC warning signs covers the signals a system gives in both seasons before it quits. ### Ovens and Ranges Before Thanksgiving Irvine kitchens have a lot of single and double wall ovens, gas ranges and, in newer homes, dual-fuel ranges. Many of them get light use most of the year and then cook for eight hours straight on one Thursday in November. That is exactly when a weak part finally quits. The common failures: Gas oven slow to light or slow to preheat : most gas ovens use a glow-bar igniter that has to draw enough current to open the gas valve. As it weakens, it still glows but the valve opens late or not at all. Electric oven not heating, or heating only from the top : often a burned-out bake element. Sometimes it is a relay or the control. Food burns or undercooks at the right setting : a drifting temperature sensor, a control issue, a worn door gasket letting heat escape, or a convection fan that stopped. Oven dead after a self-clean cycle : self-clean runs extremely hot and can finish off a marginal thermal fuse or control. Don’t run it in the days right before you host. The best move is to test the oven in October or early November: bake at 350°F with an inexpensive oven thermometer on the middle rack and see how long it takes and where it settles. Our Thanksgiving oven checklist walks through it, why an oven is not heating explains the igniter, element, sensor and control board faults behind it, and oven and range repair in Irvine covers what we fix in wall ovens, double ovens and ranges here. If the oven is dead rather than cold, no display and nothing when you press Bake, why an oven will not turn on walks through the breaker, the control lock and the reset that actually works. If the oven heats but the temperature is wrong or the heat is uneven, oven temperature problems before Thanksgiving has the stabilized thermometer test. If the oven quits on the holiday itself, what to do if your oven stops working on Thanksgiving Day covers the triage order, the five-minute breaker reset and the Plan B routes for finishing the meal. If you ever smell gas, don’t touch light switches. Leave the house and call SoCalGas from outside. For the milder version, a one-second whiff at light-off or a pop when the burner catches, gas smell and delayed ignition explains which is normal and which means stop using the oven. And if the gas company has already come out, found the line fine and tagged the range instead, what to do when the gas company says it is the appliance walks through what happens next. Burners are a separate system from the oven, so if one clicks without lighting or burns yellow, gas range burner problems is the one to read. The other November mistake we get called about is the self-clean cycle run a few days before hosting, and should you self-clean the oven before Thanksgiving explains why that goes wrong so often. A built-in double wall oven on one of our service calls. Wall ovens like this are common in Irvine kitchens, and they are the ones homeowners are most surprised by in November. ### Commercial Refrigeration in Irvine Restaurants, cafés and markets around the Irvine Spectrum, the Irvine Business Complex and the village shopping centers depend on walk-in coolers, reach-ins, prep tables and ice machines that run from open to close. Irvine is our home base, so the villages here are the first streets on our route every morning. If you call or text (310) 600-8152 before noon, a same-day window in Irvine is usually open. It is not guaranteed. Some days fill early, especially during heat waves and the weeks before Thanksgiving. If today is already full we will tell you so on the phone and give you the first real slot instead of a vague promise. My refrigerator is warm but the freezer is still cold. What does that usually mean? Cold air in most refrigerators is made in the freezer and blown into the fresh-food side by a fan. When the freezer stays cold but the fridge warms up, the usual suspects are a freezer coil that has iced over because the defrost system failed, an evaporator fan that stopped, or an air damper stuck closed. First make sure food is not blocking the vents inside the freezer and listen for the fan when the door switch is pressed. If the coil is iced over, unplugging the refrigerator for a day can make it work again for a while, but the problem comes back until the failed defrost part is found and replaced. Our refrigerator not cooling guide walks through the other causes. My AC stopped cooling and the thermostat went blank. What should I check first? Check the air filter, the breaker for the furnace or air handler, and the thermostat batteries if it uses them. In many newer two-story Irvine homes the furnace or air handler sits in the attic above a secondary drain pan, and on a lot of systems a float switch in that pan or in the condensate line shuts the system down when the condensate drain is clogged. On some wiring setups the thermostat goes blank too. That switch is doing its job: it is stopping water from coming through your ceiling. Do not open electrical panels or bypass the switch. Call us and we will clear the drain and find out why it clogged. We handle minor AC service and repairs. My oven takes forever to preheat. Can it be fixed before Thanksgiving? Usually, if you do not wait until the last week. A gas oven that is slow to light or slow to heat most often has a weakening igniter. An electric oven that heats unevenly or not at all often has a failed bake element. An oven that reaches the wrong temperature may have a temperature sensor or control problem. The parts for common models are often available within a few days, but the days right before Thanksgiving fill up for every repair company. Test the oven in October or early November. Our Thanksgiving oven checklist shows how. If you ever smell gas, leave the house and call SoCalGas from outside. I rent an apartment in Irvine. Can I call you directly? Check your lease first. In most Irvine apartments and rental homes, appliance repairs go through your property management, and a repair you arrange yourself may not be reimbursed. We work for homeowners, condo and townhome owners, landlords and property managers, and when the owner or manager books us we are happy to coordinate access with the tenant. What does a repair visit cost in Irvine, and is the work guaranteed? We give a free estimate over the phone first. The technician looks at the appliance, tells you what it needs and quotes the job on site before any work starts. Nothing happens until you approve it, and every repair carries a 90-day parts and labor warranty. If your appliance is fairly new, read understanding appliance warranties first. It may still be covered by the manufacturer. ### ZIP Codes We Serve in Irvine 92602 92603 92604 92606 92612 92614 92617 92618 92620 ### What We Repair in Irvine 🧊 Refrigerator Repair Not cooling, leaking, noisy or icing up. Safe checks before you call. Refrigerator Not Cooling? 10 Common Causes | Alpha & Omega Home › Guides › Why Is My Refrigerator Not Cooling? 10 Most Common Causes Alpha & Omega HVAC Appliance Repair · Orange County, CA · Updated September 10, 2026 ## Why Is My Refrigerator Not Cooling? 10 Most Common Causes and What You Can Check ### Key takeaways The short answer: a refrigerator that runs but won't cool is usually one of ten things, settings, blocked airflow, a bad gasket, dirty condenser coils, a dead condenser or evaporator fan, a failed defrost system, a bad temperature sensor or control board, a failing compressor, or a sealed-system fault. The first six are homeowner-checkable; the rest need a technician. Read the symptoms, not just the temperature. Freezer cold but fridge warm points at fans, frost or a damper. Both compartments warm with a hot compressor points at the condenser side. Both warm with a quiet, cool compressor points at start components or the sealed system. Three checks cost nothing: verify with a real thermometer, vacuum the condenser coils, and do the dollar-bill test on the gasket. Stop and call for clicking that ends with the compressor shutting off, a burning smell, a breaker that trips when the fridge starts, or frost that returns days after a manual defrost. One of our technicians on an LG refrigerator service call. Most no-cool visits start the same way: temperatures, frost pattern, fans, then the compressor side. A refrigerator that is running but not getting cold is the most common call we take across Irvine , Tustin, Lake Forest and the rest of South Orange County, and it is also the one where a few minutes of checking at home most often saves a service visit. This guide walks through the ten causes we find most, in roughly the order a technician would rule them out, and explains how the symptoms tell you which cause you are looking at . Along the way we mark what is safe to check yourself and where the job becomes ours. ### First, read the symptoms: what warm-where tells you Before touching anything, note three things: which compartment is warm, whether the compressor (the black dome at the back bottom) is running and how hot it is, and what you hear. Those three observations narrow ten causes to two or three. What you observe Most likely causes Freezer cold, fridge section warm Evaporator fan (6), frosted evaporator / defrost failure (7), damper or blocked vents (2), thermistor (8) Both compartments warm, compressor hot and running constantly Dirty condenser coils (4), condenser fan (5), door gasket or door ajar (3), overloaded box (2) Both warm, compressor clicks every few minutes and stays cool or warm Start relay / overload / compressor (9), low voltage Both warm, compressor runs quietly and gets warm but nothing gets cold Sealed-system leak or restriction (10) Fridge slightly warm, cycles seem short or odd, display wrong Settings (1), thermistor or control board (8) Frost on the freezer back panel, airflow weak Defrost system failure (7) Fridge freezing food in the back or drawers Damper stuck open, thermistor (8), gasket letting humid air in (3) ### 1. Temperature settings, and a display you should not trust It sounds too simple, but it is real: a grocery bag or a curious child nudges a dial or a touchpad, or a power blip resets a control to a default. The fresh-food compartment should be at about 37°F (3°C) and the freezer at 0°F (−18°C) . Set them, then verify with an inexpensive fridge thermometer left inside for a few hours. Many refrigerators display the setpoint , not the actual temperature, and on some models the sensor that feeds the display is the very part that has failed. If the thermometer agrees with the display, move on. If the display says 37°F and the thermometer says 50°F, jump to cause 8. Safe to check yourself: yes. Also look for a "vacation", "demo" or "showroom" mode, which keeps the lights on and the cooling off; the manual for your model shows how to exit it. ### 2. Blocked airflow inside the refrigerator Most household refrigerators make cold in one place, the evaporator behind the freezer's back panel, and move it around with a fan through vents and a damper. Anything that blocks that path makes one compartment warm while the other is fine. The usual offenders are a pizza box or sheet pan pressed against the vent on the back wall of the freezer, an overpacked fresh-food section, or a bag of frozen vegetables jammed into the vent between compartments. An under-filled refrigerator also struggles, because there is no thermal mass to hold temperature between cycles. What to check: pull food away from the vents in both compartments, leave a hand's width of space at the back wall, and give the fridge a few hours. On many models a damper between freezer and fridge can also stick shut; if you hear the fan run and the freezer is cold but no cold air comes through the fresh-food vent at all, the damper motor is a likely suspect and is a technician job. ### 3. Door gasket leaking, or a door that is not fully closing A door gasket that no longer seals lets warm, humid room air pour in around the clock. The compressor runs almost continuously, frost builds on the evaporator faster than the defrost cycle can clear it, and the fridge side slowly loses the battle. Humid inland evenings in Lake Forest and Mission Viejo make this worse than most people expect. What to check: close the door on a dollar bill at several points around the frame. If it slides out with no resistance anywhere, that section is not sealing. Wipe the gasket with warm soapy water first, because sticky residue is the most common reason a gasket fails to seat. Look for cracks, tears or a corner that has pulled out of its channel. Also check that the refrigerator is level or tilted slightly back so the doors swing closed on their own, and that a crisper drawer or shelf is not holding the door open a quarter inch. A torn or hardened gasket is a straightforward replacement. ### 4. Dirty condenser coils, the number one cause we find Everything the refrigerator pulls out of the box has to be released somewhere, and that place is the condenser coil, usually under the unit behind the base grille, sometimes on the back. When the coil is wrapped in dust, pet hair and kitchen grease, it cannot shed heat. Pressure on the high side climbs, the compressor runs hot and long, and cooling falls off. On a hot day, or in a tight built-in cabinet with poor ventilation, it can stop cooling altogether. Homes with dogs or cats reach this point in a year or two. What to check: unplug the refrigerator, remove the base grille, and look. If you see a felt-like mat over the coils, vacuum it with a crevice tool and a long coil brush, from both the front and, if possible, the back. Vacuum the condenser fan blades while you are there. Plug it back in and give it several hours. We put this on our maintenance checklist because it prevents a large share of the no-cool calls we see, and it is the first thing a technician does on arrival anyway. ### 5. Condenser fan motor Next to the compressor sits a small fan that pulls air across the condenser coil and over the compressor. If it stops, the coil cannot dump heat even when it is clean. The classic pattern is a compressor that is too hot to touch , cooling that fades over an afternoon, and eventually the compressor's overload protector shutting it down until it cools, so the fridge cycles between "sort of working" and "not at all". What to check: with the fridge running, listen and look at the back bottom. The condenser fan should be spinning whenever the compressor runs. If it is stalled, a stuck blade or debris is occasionally the culprit; more often the motor has failed. Do not run the refrigerator for long with a dead condenser fan, because you are cooking the compressor. Fan motor replacement is a routine repair. ### 6. Evaporator fan motor The evaporator fan lives behind the freezer's back panel and is the fan you hear when you open the door and press the door switch. It moves cold air from the evaporator through both compartments. When it fails, the freezer often stays cold near the coil while everything else warms up, and the fresh-food section is usually the first to complain. Bearings tend to announce themselves first with a chirp, a squeal or a rhythmic scraping that changes when the door opens; a fan iced into its housing is silent. What to check: open the freezer and press and hold the door switch (or use the model's fan test). You should hear the fan spin up within a few seconds. Silence, a hum without spinning, or scraping means the fan or its motor needs attention. If there is frost on the back panel as well, cause 7 is probably what killed it. Fan motor replacement is a routine repair; on many models the harness and the evaporator cover come off in minutes. ### 7. Ice buildup: the defrost system has failed Frost-free refrigerators are not frost-free by magic. Several times a day a defrost heater under the evaporator melts the frost that normal operation deposits on the coil, and a defrost thermostat or bi-metal switch ends the cycle. When the heater, the thermostat, the timer, or the control board that runs the cycle fails, frost builds until the coil is a solid block of ice. Air can no longer pass through it, and the result is a freezer that looks cold and frosty while the fridge side goes warm. What to check: look at the freezer's back panel. Heavy frost across it, or ice that looks like it was poured, is the signature. A useful test is a manual defrost: unplug the unit, open the doors, put towels down, and let it thaw for 24 hours. If cooling returns and then fades again over one to three weeks, the defrost system is confirmed and needs a proper repair. A manual defrost is a diagnosis, not a fix. Defrost heaters and thermostats are moderate repairs; on newer refrigerators the defrost logic lives in the main control board, which is a technician's diagnosis. An evaporator compartment after we cleared the ice on a defrost repair. When frost gets this far, the fan and the airflow path are blocked and the fresh-food side goes warm first. ### 8. Thermistors, sensors and the control board Modern refrigerators do not use a mechanical cold-control knob. Two or more thermistors report compartment temperatures to a control board, which decides when to run the compressor, the fans, the damper and the defrost cycle. When a thermistor drifts out of range, the board believes the box is cold when it is not, or the reverse, and you get a refrigerator that is warm on a thermometer while the display insists everything is fine, or one that freezes lettuce in the crisper. Boards can also lose a relay for the compressor or the fans, or drop a fan speed, which looks exactly like a mechanical fan failure. What to check: only the comparison between the display and a real thermometer. Anything past that requires measuring thermistor resistance against the manufacturer's chart and reading the board's diagnostic mode, which we do on every no-cool visit. On brands we are factory authorized for, LG and Liebherr among them, we also have the service documentation and test modes for the specific model, which turns a guess into a measurement. ### 9. Compressor, start relay and overload If the compressor never starts, nothing else matters. But a compressor that will not start is not always a bad compressor. The start relay and overload protector clipped to its side fail far more often than the compressor itself, and the symptom is the same: a click, a hum for a few seconds, another click as the overload trips, and silence, repeating every few minutes. A compressor that starts, runs and gets warm but produces no cold is a different story and belongs under cause 10. What to check: listen. Click-hum-click every two to five minutes is the pattern to report to the technician. Do not keep the refrigerator running for days in this state. Relay and overload replacement is a modest repair. A genuinely failed compressor, especially on a basic top-freezer model over about 12 years old, is where the repair-or-replace decision is real; on a built-in, a counter-depth French-door or a premium unit it is usually still worth doing. Some LG models with linear compressors have had extended manufacturer warranty coverage on the compressor itself; we check that before quoting. ### 10. Sealed-system problems: leaks and restrictions The sealed system is the refrigerant loop: compressor, condenser, capillary tube or expansion device, evaporator. Refrigerant is not consumed, so "low refrigerant" always means a leak. The tell-tale is a compressor that runs quietly, gets warm, and is joined by a partially frosted evaporator, often just the first few inches of coil while the rest stays bare, or by a condenser that is barely warm. A restriction in the capillary tube or a clogged filter-drier produces a similar picture, sometimes with frost at a single point on a tube. What to check: nothing beyond noting the pattern. Sealed-system work requires EPA certification, recovery equipment, brazing and a vacuum pump, and it is the most involved repair a refrigerator can need. We do sealed-system repair and we are honest about when it is worth it: on a five-year-old built-in, yes; on an old basic model, often not. Either way the diagnosis comes first, because a warm compressor and a warm box is also what a failed condenser fan or a dirty condenser looks like from across the kitchen. ### What you can safely check yourself, in order Settings, special modes, and a real thermometer in each compartment. Vents clear, nothing pressed against the back wall, reasonable load. Dollar-bill test around the gasket; wipe it; confirm the doors swing closed. Unplug, remove the base grille, vacuum the condenser coils and fan. Listen: condenser fan spinning when the compressor runs; evaporator fan running when you hold the door switch. Look for frost on the freezer's back panel; if present, a 24-hour manual defrost as a test. Leave to a technician: anything involving the compressor and its electrical components, thermistor and board diagnostics, damper motors, defrost circuit testing, and everything in the sealed system. A refrigerator has 120-volt wiring in a damp environment and a pressurized refrigerant loop; the checks above are the safe boundary. ### When to stop and call Clicking every few minutes that ends with the compressor shutting off. A compressor too hot to touch with no cooling. Any burning or electrical smell, or a breaker that trips when the refrigerator starts. Frost that returns within days of a manual defrost. Ice on a refrigerant line or an oily residue near the compressor. A built-in, Sub-Zero, Liebherr, Thermador or other premium unit: the parts are specific, and improvising costs more than diagnosing. ### How long is the food safe? Per USDA guidance, with the doors kept closed a refrigerator holds a safe temperature for about 4 hours ; a full freezer holds for about 48 hours , a half-full one for about 24. Keep the doors shut, move the most perishable items to an ice chest if the repair will not happen the same day, and when in doubt, throw it out. If it is the freezer that is warm and the fridge is fine, the causes are different; see our freezer not cooling guide . ### Preventing the next no-cool call Vacuum the condenser coils every 6 to 12 months, more often with pets or in a tight built-in cabinet. Keep an inch or two of clearance behind and above a freestanding refrigerator so the condenser can breathe. Wipe gaskets twice a year and replace one that has hardened or torn instead of living with a fridge that runs all day. Do not block the vents, and do not store hot leftovers uncovered; the extra humidity ends up as frost on the evaporator. Keep a thermometer in the fridge. Catching 42°F early is a fan or a coil; catching 55°F a week later is spoiled food and possibly a cooked compressor. After a power outage, check that the controls did not reset to a default or a demo mode. The full schedule, monthly, twice-yearly and annual, including the defrost drain, the water filter and the top-grille ventilation on built-ins, is in our refrigerator maintenance checklist . ### What we do when we arrive Our technician measures actual compartment temperatures, reads the frost pattern on the evaporator (it reveals a great deal about what failed), tests both fans, the damper, the defrost circuit and the thermistors, checks the compressor's start components and, if the picture points there, the sealed system. You get a clear explanation and a quote before any work begins, and most refrigerator repairs are completed the same day from parts stocked on the truck. We are factory authorized for LG and factory authorized for Liebherr; for Samsung we are certified technicians; and we provide professional service for Sub-Zero, Thermador, Bosch, GE, Whirlpool, Frigidaire and most other brands found in South Orange County kitchens. See our refrigerator repair service page, or the local pages for Irvine , Lake Forest , Mission Viejo , Laguna Niguel and San Clemente . ### Frequently Asked Questions #### Why is my refrigerator running but not cooling? When the compressor hums but the box stays warm, the usual causes are, in rough order of how often we find them: dust-packed condenser coils, a failed evaporator or condenser fan, frost buildup from a failed defrost system, blocked vents inside the compartments, a leaking door gasket, a bad thermistor or control board, and finally the compressor or a sealed-system fault. The first five you can check yourself; the last three need a technician. #### Freezer works but the refrigerator side is warm: what does that mean? In most refrigerators the cold is made in the freezer and blown into the fresh-food side. If the freezer is fine but the fridge is warm, suspect the evaporator fan, a frosted-over evaporator (defrost failure), a blocked or stuck damper between the compartments, or a thermistor that is reporting the wrong temperature. Check the freezer's back panel for frost and listen for the fan when the door switch is pressed. #### How long can I wait before food spoils? Keep the doors closed. According to USDA guidance, a refrigerator holds a safe temperature for about 4 hours without cooling; a full freezer holds for about 48 hours, a half-full one for about 24. Move meat, dairy and leftovers to an ice chest if the repair cannot happen the same day. #### Can dirty condenser coils really stop a refrigerator from cooling? Yes. The condenser is where the refrigerant sheds the heat it pulled out of the box. A thick blanket of dust and pet hair insulates the coil, head pressure climbs, the compressor runs hot and long, and cooling falls off, on hot days it can stop cooling entirely. Cleaning the coils is the single most useful piece of maintenance a homeowner can do. #### Should I unplug the fridge for 24 hours to fix it? A manual defrost is a useful test, not a fix. If cooling comes back after 24 hours unplugged with the doors open and then fades again within one to three weeks, the automatic defrost system (heater, defrost thermostat or bi-metal, or the control) has failed and needs to be repaired properly. #### Is a refrigerator that stopped cooling worth repairing? Usually yes for units under about 10 years old and for built-in, counter-depth and premium models. Fans, gaskets, thermistors, start relays and defrost parts are moderate repairs. A sealed-system leak or a compressor on an older basic model is where the repair-or-replace conversation gets real; a technician can tell you which one you have before any work begins. ### Related Pages Refrigerator Repair in Orange County Refrigerator Repair in Irvine Sealed-System & Compressor Repair Factory Authorized LG Repair Factory Authorized Liebherr Repair Refrigerator Leaking Water Freezer Not Cooling or Freezing Frost Building Up in Your Freezer?
